Service overview

Clear land-cover evidence for better planning

Land use and land cover mapping describes the distribution of categories such as cropland, forest, built-up areas, water bodies and bare land across an area of interest. VTS selects a suitable classification system and satellite datasets to produce interpretable maps for planning and analysis.

Multi-date imagery can show where land cover has changed, provided differences in season, sensor, cloud cover and classification uncertainty are addressed.

Technical limitation: LULC class labels and change estimates depend on image quality, mapping scale, reference data, seasonal effects and classification accuracy. They should not be interpreted as legally verified land ownership or parcel boundaries.

Our methodology

How the analysis is developed

The workflow is adapted to the location, scale, source-data quality and the decisions the project must support.

01 — Define

Define classification

Agree on study extent, time periods, intended use, mapping scale and land-cover classes.

02 — Acquire

Acquire imagery

Select suitable Sentinel, Landsat or other imagery and apply cloud and seasonal screening.

03 — Prepare

Prepare data

Mosaic, mask and preprocess scenes; prepare indices and supporting terrain layers as needed.

04 — Classify

Classify land cover

Use interpretable rules or supervised classification methods matched to available training data.

05 — Assess

Assess accuracy

Evaluate confusion matrix and class-specific errors against independent reference samples where feasible.

06 — Deliver

Deliver change insights

Produce LULC maps, transition tables, statistics and uncertainty notes for agreed dates.

Applications

Where land use land cover (lulc) mapping supports decisions

Watershed planning

Assess land-cover context for runoff, erosion and conservation prioritisation.

Urban and infrastructure studies

Track the expansion of built-up areas and changes in surrounding land.

Agricultural monitoring

Map cropland distribution and landscape changes.

Environmental assessments

Document land-cover baselines and changes near sensitive areas.

Forest and wetland monitoring

Identify patterns of potential conversion for closer review.

Planning and research

Produce comparable land-cover datasets for time-series analysis.

Frequently asked questions

Land Use Land Cover (LULC) Mapping FAQs

What is an LULC map?

A thematic map showing how an area is covered or used, using defined categories such as vegetation, agriculture, water, built-up land and bare surfaces.

Can you compare land cover across years?

Yes, where appropriate satellite data are available. Comparable dates and consistent methods help limit misleading change signals.

Is LULC classification 100% accurate?

No. Accuracy varies with class definitions, image resolution and quality of reference data; validation and uncertainty should be documented.

Which satellite datasets are suitable?

Sentinel-2 and Landsat are often useful for regional mapping. The choice depends on the area, period, resolution and technical requirements.

What is required for a quotation?

Share the area of interest, mapping years, desired classes, area or resolution, available reference data and intended deliverables.
